JP Morgan and Bhutan make history on the blockchain, choose Solana

In one of the first debt issuances ever executed on a public blockchain, banking giant JP Morgan has just issued a short-term corporate debt instrument for Galaxy Digital – and it chose to launch the product on the Solana blockchain. Franklin Templeton and Coinbase have purchased Galaxy Digital’s debt tokens in “a landmark transaction” executed on Solana, a high performance blockchain that is “tailor-made for financial markets”.

Today’s transaction is an important step toward understanding the role blockchain will play in the future of financial markets,” JPMorgan’s Head of Digital Assets was quoted as saying by media. “This trade demonstrates institutional appetite for digital assets and our capability to securely bring new instruments on-chain using Solana.”

A representative of Galaxy Digital stated:

“This issuance is a clear example of how public blockchains can improve the way capital markets operate. By bringing our first commercial paper offering on-chain and helping structure one of the earliest U.S. transactions of its kind, we’re putting into practice the model we’ve long believed in: open, programmable infrastructure that supports institutional-grade financial products.”

Driving the next stage of digital finance

This landmark move is the latest example of how tokenization will drive the next stage of digital finance as smart contracts move onto fast and inexpensive blockchain rails. As we reported last week, the world’s largest asset manager, Blackrock, says that the tokenization of assets on the blockchain is shaping the next evolution of global markets and will act as a bridge between the crypto industry and traditional finance (TradFi).

Bhutan turns to Solana for bold gold move

This move also comes in another landmark event that saw the first nation-state in the world to launch a digital asset on Solana. The conservative yet crypto progressive country of Bhutan has launched its own gold-pegged cryptocurrency, TER, “designed to act as a new bridge between traditional value stores and blockchain-based finance, with each token representing physical gold held in custody”.

The CEO of Bhutan’s DP Bank said they chose Solana for their gold-pegged token is due to “the reliability and processing speed needed to operate public assets safely on-chain”.

“We will expand partnerships with global web3 companies and bank partners using Bhutan’s resources, policies, and financial institutions. Starting with the first sovereign gold token, we will actively build a national-level digital asset ecosystem.”
