Kazakhstan launches Solana Economic Zone

Kazakhstan has just officially launched a unique version of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). This SEZ is called the Solana Economic Zone, named after the innovative blockchain and cryptocurrency. The SEZ will be a testing ground for blockchain pilots, startup incubation, and international collaboration as part of the country’s ambition to become a regional crypto and blockchain hub.

According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry, the zone is modeled after successful initiatives like the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, which supports the growth of digital assets through regulatory clarity and infrastructure support. The country also plans to launch a tokenized capital markets pilot involving the Astana International Exchange (AIX), Jupiter, Intebix, and the Solana Foundation as part of a broader MOU with the Solana Foundation. This pilot program aims to integrate tokenized assets into Kazakhstan’s financial markets, laying the groundwork for a blockchain-powered financial system.

This Central Asian country once accounted for 27% of global Bitcoin mining,  but recently it has been repositioning itself and moving up the crypto supply chain to become a regulated hub for digital assets.

Meanwhile, Solana’s foray into the country is part of the blockchain’s strategy to gain more influence in undertapped crypto markets as it seeks to one day overcome its main rival, Ethereum, the blockchain of the world’s number two cryptocurrency by marketcap.

Solana is a popular blockchain for niche crypto investors. Like Ethereum, but unlike Bitcoin, Solana is a “proof of stake” blockchain where holders can stake Solana to participate in the network’s security and earn yield (similar to dividends by holding stocks). However, more lucrative yield can be earned through providing liquidity on Solana DeFi platforms, in which providers earn a share of revenue from trading fees. There is strong and growing insitutional demand for the cryptocurrency with a handful of corporations now including it in their treasuries. Moreover, Solana is tipped to be the next cryptocurrency approved for an ETF. Bloomberg’s ETF probability chart assigned Solana a 95% chance of approval this year signalling strong expectations around a potential green ligh by the SEC. The approval could come as early as July, according to analysts.
